Is your morning routine in need of an overhaul? I truly believe that the way we start our morning ultimately sets the tone for the rest of the day. We all want to wake up happy and feel great and I’m on a mission to make morning routines easier and happier!
If you’re looking for 5 easy steps to a better and happier morning routine then you’re in the right place! It’s time to wake up happy!
Step 1: Organize the Day Before
One of the best ways to set yourself up for a relaxed and happy morning routine is to plan ahead. Great organization is the key! Whether you’re on your own or have a household full of people to look after, there are many things that can be prepared the day before to make for a better morning routine.
Here are 4 of my favourite ways to get organized in advance for a better morning routine:
1. Choose clothing and accessories the night before
I try to do this each evening and it’s a big time saver! It also helps to avoid those desperate searches for that shirt you wanted to wear only to realize that it’s in the laundry!
If you have kids, setting out their clothing the day before can also help avoid clothing meltdowns! Get them involved in choosing the outfit and they’ll be less likely to change their mind the next day.
2. Prepare meals in advance
Get your breakfast ready in advance by making some delicious overnight oats, healthy muffins or your favourite breakfast recipe. Then in the morning, just grab it and go!
Do you take a lunch to work or school every day? Get it ready and pack it up the night before! If you have leftovers from dinner that will be tomorrow’s lunch, pack it up and put it in the fridge right away.
Place your cutlery and your favourite healthy snacks in your lunch bag and there’s almost nothing left to do in the morning! Just pack the refrigerated items in your bag in the morning and you’re good to go.
3. Set your coffee maker
I really enjoy coffee but I can’t be bothered to fumble around with a coffee maker in the morning. And while I love to buy coffee too, making my own saves so much time and money! The solution? A coffee maker that you can set to your desired strength and amount of cups AND freshly grinds the beans!
I use the Breville Grind Control drip coffee maker and I love it! I just pour fresh water and roasted whole beans into the machine the night before and then press start in the morning.

4. Pack your bags
You know that bag that you lug to and from work or school everyday? Well, don’t wait until the morning to pack it up! You know you’re going to end up running around looking for something and not be able to find it. So just pack it all the night before. An easy peasy way to make a better morning routine! And don’t forget your phone charger! 😉
Step 2: Wake Up the Right Way
Wake-Up Light and Clock
One of the biggest ways to improve your morning routine and wake up happy is with the right alarm clock! I cannot even tell you how much of a difference this has made in my life and I’m so excited to share this with you!
I swear by the Philips Wake-Up Light that I bought from Amazon. If you haven’t heard about it before, let me fill you in on its greatness and why this is a super important part of my morning routine.
You set your desired wake-up time and it begins to slowly light up, simulating the natural sunrise, until it’s completely bright at the time you set! It’s the coolest thing! And yes, it actually wakes you up with the gentle light! There are backup sounds too just in case the light doesn’t do the trick, but I’ve never had to use them.

Wake Up with Intention
Have you ever woken up and realized that you’re late and literally jump out of bed in a panic? I have and it’s just the worst! I end up feeling completely out of sorts and the rest of my day can feel totally off.
But I’ve discovered a way to start the day off feeling positive and calm and it’s one of my keys to waking up happy.
I use the Breethe App and listen to the “wake up with intention” meditation! It’s only 4 min long (you can definitely make time for it) and you listen to it before you even get out of bed! Perfect! For me, this is a game changer for a better morning routine and to wake up happy!

Step 3: Energize Your Body and Mind
You’ve already prepped for your breakfast the night before (right?), so now take the time to actually eat! I know, I know, you’ve heard this from just about everyone, but eating breakfast is such an important part of your morning routine. Starting a busy day with no fuel just isn’t a good idea (and no one is at their best when they’re hangry!).
I’m definitely guilty of sometimes skipping breakfast and just gulping my coffee as I head out the door. So I’ve tried to make it a habit to always start the day with at least a banana and I’ve recently fallen for overnight oats! Healthy fast food!
Adding some great healthy foods into your morning routine can really help you wake up happy.
Move Your Body
Exercising in the morning is a fantastic component to a successful morning routine. Whether it’s light stretching, a quick walk, yoga, or a full workout, run or exercise class, moving your body is a great way to wake up happy!
Exercise in the morning gives you more energy throughout the day, helps you focus and elevates your mood!

Step 4: Set Goals for Your Day
Starting the day with a positive mindset, a feeling of gratitude and a goal you’d like to accomplish will set your day up right.
Goal setting can easily be incorporated into a morning routine and allows you to focus on something positive that you’d like to achieve. I find that taking a moment in the morning to think about what I’d like to accomplish that day really increases my motivation and energizes me!
Your goals can be as big or as small as you’d like; the point is to provide positive motivation and start your day ready to go!
Step 5: Go For It!
You’ve organized yourself, woken up the right way, energized your body and mind and set your goals for the day. You, my friend, have successfully made a better morning routine that you can do every day and will have you waking up happy!
Now it’s time to put a smile on your face and know that you’ve taken care of yourself (and possibly others) and that you’ve set yourself up for success!
